OddKidOut ft: Macntaj - CODES (Single) + 10 Questions

Forward-thinking producer and singer-songwriter OddKidOut has joined forces with Seattle-based rapper Macntaj for their new single, “CODES,” on Monstercat. The hip-hop meets electronic record sat as a flip to Big L’sMVP” for nearly two years, but upon revisiting his work, the finger drumming mastermind turned it into a punchy crossover collab with glitchy breakbeat drums and dexterous rap verses from Macntaj. Although hip-hop has always influenced OddKidOut’s project, the new single sees him produce outside of his typical range, flexing his versatile musical stylings.

OddKidOut shares, "My ultimate goal with this track was to bridge hip-hop and EDM in a new, refreshing, and genuine way that excites both hip-hop heads and EDM lovers.”

Macntaj adds, “OddKidOut couldn't have sent this record to me at a better time. I've been on an extended break from everything art for the last 10 months after a hectic year prior. At first listen, I was instantly inspired and able to get a lot of frustration out on this record. I spoke on a few things I have yet to even touch on in my solo music.”

Growing up listening to 90s era hip-hop with inspirations spanning J Dilla, Pete Rock, Mobb Deep, and more, the instrumental producer OddKidOut’s beat-making momentum sky-rocketed after signing to OWSLA in 2017. Fast-forward to 2021, he won the Goldie Awards’ Beat Battle and signed with Monstercat, since garnering support and collaborations with Skrillex, NanaBcool, and a remix for Tove Lo. Next, OddKidOut is set to play festival slots at EDC Orlando this November and We Are Friends in December with more shows and releases to come in 2023.

Linking with Seattle-based rapper Macntaj was no surprise, as he’s one of the most in-demand rappers for EDM tastemakers. His authentic lyrics and sultry vocals have been featured on records with Black Tiger Sex Machine, Kai Wachi, UZ, among others. Macntaj’s multi-genre work has taken his solo career to new heights, with his debut album ‘Big Bloc Meign’ taking off in 2021, spurring collaborations with X-Raided, TeZATalks, and more.

OddKidOut sat down with Wordplay to answer our infamous 10 Questions:

1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?

My dad saw me air drumming in my car seat when I was a young jute and he asked me if I wanted to take some drum lessons. I quickly became obsessed with playing, and discovering all types of different music was a daily hobby of mine. It gave purpose to my life.

2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?

My biggest inspirations include J Dilla, Flying Lotus, Stewart Copeland, and Aphex Twin. I would really love to work with Pharrell, Flume, Kid Cudi or Getter. I’ve been lucky enough to have the chance to work with two of my idols; Timbaland and Skrillex. I would love to work with them again!

3. What projects do you have coming up and can you give us any info on them?

I have one more release coming at the end of 2022 and 2023 is fully packed with more OKO originals and a bunch of live shows.

4. How would you describe your sound?

People always ask what my genre is and I have no idea aha. It’s a combination of electronic, hiphop, trap and drum and bass. Just high energy music that evokes emotion!

5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?

Seeing my parents proud of me on stage or when they listen to my music. That will forever be my favorite thing.

6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?

Trust your gut! You are called an artist for a reason…you have the foresight and the wherewithal to know what is best for you. Believe in yourself even when people don’t understand it, and keep your head down and work your ass off.

7. Are there any artists on your radar right now that we should check out?

Quickly, Quickly is one of my favorite artists right now…I listen to him a lot and the range in his music is super impressive. Definitely check him out if you haven’t yet.

8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?

Omens by Lamb of God. They just released the album this month and it’s so heavy, I love every song on it.

9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?

If I’m not producing, I’m either skimboarding, playing video games or watching true crime documentaries on Netflix lol.

10. Name three things you can't live without when in the studio?

My half gallon Yeti water bottle, weed and any random assortment of sour candy.
